In 1950, Al Mulhaupt forfeited the Doubles title to Orville Eberly. 203 gunners took the line for the Handicap title on Saturday, June 15th. When the smoke cleared Stanley Goff of Chester, PA, led the field with the only 93x100 from the 20 yard line.

The second day of the tournament was contested in a heavy downpour and cold temperature's. It was necessary to postpone the Doubles event that day. However, Mercer Tennille of Shreveport, LA led a wet field of 130 with a 99 in the Class Singles. The final day of the tournament featured the Pennsylvania Singles Championship, increased to 150 targets. During the war time shoots of 1942 & 1943, lack of ammunition caused the shoots to be reduced to 100 singles, 50 handicap and 50 doubles. Charles Ramsden of Dravosburg broke 149 for the title. He defeated a field of 310 shooters. Ramsden had tied for the title back in 1941 with Steve Crothers and Walter Beaver with 199. That was the shoot where Crothers and Beaver went 175 overtime targets to decide the title with Crothers winning. Ramsden was eliminated in the first 25 target shoot-off. Long won the HAA with 317x350 while Forrest McNeir won the HOA (which was open to all) with 596x650.

No war time shoot held in 1945.

1944 at Ruffsdale Gun Club, Ruffsdale, PA
June 24-25, 1944

CHARLES STEINER HAS THE ONLY 100 STRAIGHT TO WIN STATE
SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP, BEAVER WINS THIRD DOUBLES TITLE

Ruffsdale hosted the 1944 State Shoot, the first time since 1929 that a Western Pennsylvania club hosted the shoot. Like the 1943 shoot, it was reduced to 200 targets. It was incredible that they were able to hold any shoot at all. In fact, the shoot would be canceled in 1945. Lack of ammunition, travel restrictions, defense jobs, shooters in the armed service, tire rationing, gasoline rationing, etc. would play a major part in the 200 target shoots of 1943, 1944 and the cancellation in 1945. High winds reduced the scores on Saturday, brought about by the tail end of a tornado which took 158 lives less than 100 mile from the club. Andy Long was re-elected President of the PSSA as well as all other officers, including George Baldwin, George Neubling and Doug Gilpin.

On Saturday, Walter Beaver paced a field of 53 when he smashed 48x50 for the Doubles Championship. That same day, with 107 shooters on the line, John McCornmick of Bentleyville, PA, ran his score up to 47 from the 18 yard line and led the field by two targets. Emma Fairchild won the women's Handicap title, as well as the women's Doubles title. 32 squads took the line on Sunday for the State Singles Championship and Charles Steiner, of nearby Pittsburgh, broke the only 100 straight to win the title. His highest previous score was a 98. An outstanding score which saw a stiff wind leave many of the state's great shots well down the leader board. Irene Hess won her 8th Women's Singles Championship in nine years.

1943 at South End Gun Club, Reading, PA
June 19-20, 1943

RALPH GROVE WINS SINGLES TITLE WITH 100 STRAIGHT
CROTHERS/BEAVER WIN STATE TWO MAN TEAM TITLE

Never in the remarkable history of the PSSA, organized at Ye House of Crosby, in Correy, Erie County, on Friday, August 22, 1890, been compelled to call off their annual state shoot at clay targets. During the Spanish American War in 1898, the shoot was held in Reading, and 85 shooters participated. Again, in 1918, during World War I, the shoot was held in Lancaster. However, a record d field of 240 shooters took part in the reduced two day program.

Ralph Grove of York, PA, won the Singles Championship when a topped the record field with the only 100 straight. The York alderman won a $100.00 defense bond and will represent Pennsylvania in the Champion/Champions event at the 1943 Grand American. Frank Dissinger won an 8 way shoot-off for the $50.00 defense bond for runner-up. The field included Steve Crothers, who had a 25, 24, 24 to Dissinger's 25, 24, 25. Crothers had attempted to win his 15th State Singles Championship. Irene Hess won the ladies' title, her 7th. George Newmaster won the HAA with 192x200 and the Doubles title with a 49x50, while Dissinger took the Handicap title with 47x50. Crothers and Walter Beaver won the two man team title with 99x100 (known as the Milt Lindsay Cup, placed in competition in 1892) . The three man team title (Harrisburg Shooting Asso. silver trophy, first placed in competition in 1891) was won by the Bradford Gun Club, and the five man team trophy.

1942 at Valley Gun and Country Club, Elysburg, PA
June 18-21, 1942

GEORGE NEWMASTER WINS HANDICAP, HAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
LONG WINS DOUBLES TITLE, MORLEY MCBRAYNE WINS SINGLES

The shoot was held at the Valley Gun and Country Club in Elysburg for the second time, the first being in 1937. The club had four program traps available, and would expand to 8 for the 1948 shoot. Credit for the out-standing success of this shoot goes to Andy Long, the tournament chairman. Without question, the 1942 Keystone state classic was voted one of the best shoots in history. A gallery of over 3,000 could be seen each day, following squads and shoot-offs. Long was also elected President of the PSSA, his first elected office in the PSSA. He would serve three years as President and 31 years as Secretary. Joe Ulmer, Norristown, PA, the legendary squad hustler, kept the shoot moving throughout the tournament.

The Class AA award in the Pennsylvania Class Championship was won by Walter Beaver with 149. Al Mulhaupt won the Class A title with 148. Long won the Doubles Championship on Saturday with a 97x100. George Newmaster, the legendary pigeon shooter, surprised the crowd when he took the State Handicap Championship with a 97 which included a long run of 69. Lawrence Dana, the 1934 Grand American Handicap Champion, finished one back with a 96. On Sunday, the State Singles Championship drew a field of 150 shooters. Morley McBrayne of West Chester, PA, captured the big title with a 197 and a three round shoot-off over Joe Ruos of Doylestown, PA. Irene Hess won her 6th women's title. Joseph Dissinger won the junior title with a 171x200.

The Bradford Gun Club won the 5 man team Reading Cup. Morris Leitzel and Leon Zettlemoyer of South End Gun Club won the two man team Lindsley Cup. The historic Harrisburg trophy, awarded to three man team champions, was won by the Homestead Park Gun Club.

1941 at Bradford Gun Club, Bradford, PA
June 18-21, 1941

CROTHERS WINS 14TH AND FINAL STATE SINGLES TITLE
DEFEATS BEAVER 175-173 IN CLASSIC SEVEN ROUND SHOOT-OFF

The Bradford Gun Club hosted their 5th Pennsylvania State Championship. The last two times Bradford held the big shoot, in 1936 and 1931, Steve Crothers won the Singles titles. So it came as no surprise this year when he won again at Bradford. But how he won, in the most historic shoot-off in state history, was a surprise. C.D. Wolfe of Washington, PA, was elected President of the PSSA. George Baldwin was retained as Vice President, George Neubling as Secretary and Doug Gilpin as Treasurer.

With America about to enter World War II in less than 6 months, a dark shadow was cast over the shoot. The war had already begun in Europe. The big news of the shoot was Crothers and Walter Beaver, each tying for the coveted State Singles Championship with 199's. Also in a tie for the title was C. E. Ramsden, but he fell out of the historic shoot-off after the first 25. Crothers and Beaver matched target for target for the first 150 extra inning targets. However, on the 7th extra round, with the sun setting, Beaver drew two targets in line with the setting sun and lost them, giving Crothers the title. Crothers also beat Beaver for the Class AA in the Class Championships, winning this in regulation 149-148. Irene Hess won her 5th State Women's title with a 195.

On Saturday, June 20, 1941, Beaver took the State Handicap title when he broke a 99 from the 25 yard line, the maximum distance in 1941. It would be 51 years before another shooter would win the State Handicap title from maximum distance. In 1992, Steve Huber of Bethel, PA, would win the title from the 27 yard line, beating Frank Little in another historic shoot-off. Beaver set a HAA record of 394x400 that would not be tied in 50 years, by Frank Little in 1991. However, in 1994, the record was finally erased when Ken Darroch of Aliquippa, PA, when he had a 397x400.

1940 at Roxborough Gun Club, Philadelphia, PA
50th Annual Pennsylvania State Shoot
June 19-22, 1940

FIFTIETH ANNUAL STATE SHOOT AT ROXBOROUGH GUN CLUB
STATE RECORD LOW SCORES WIN ALL MAJOR EVENTS

The Roxborough Gun Club, Philadelphia, PA, organized in 1924, hosted their first and only State Shoot from June 15-19, 1940. This marked the 50th renewal of the big event, the first being held in Williamsport in 1891. The club threw 650 program targets during the four day festival. The scores that won the singles, handicap, doubles, and HAA remain the lowest to ever win these titles over the 107 years of the state shoot.

Steve Crothers, the Philadelphia "Ironman" captured his 13th Singles title when he won a two round shoot-off over Howard Nice, after each posted 194's in the wind blown championship. It marked the lowest score ever to win the event. 125 shooters took part in the program. The two man team trophy (Lindsley Cup) ended in a tie between the team of Crothers and John Rigg and the team of Roy Hemmig and D. B. Diefenderfer. Walter Beaver, Crothers and Rigg won the three man team title (Harrisburg Cup). The five man team (Reading Cup) also ended in a tied between Roxborough and South End.

E. M. Alleman of West Fairview, PA, won the Handicap title from the 21 yard line with a 91x100. The weather conditions were ideal with very little wind. This also marked the lowest score ever to win the Handicap Championship in state history. In high, gale force winds, A. J. McDowell of Lansdowne, PA, won the Doubles title with 82x100. This also was the lowest score to ever to win the Doubles Championship. Beaver won the HAA with a record low score of 355x400.

1939 at South End Gun Club, Reading, PA
June 15-18, 1939

RIGG BREAKS 100 STRAIGHT TO WIN STATE HANDICAP TITLE
CROTHERS WINS 16'S, BEAVER WINS DOUBLES

South End Gun Club hosted the 49th renewal of the Pennsylvania State Shoot. The club added 8 new trap fields for the tournament and would replace the old clubhouse with a new one at the conclusion of the shoot. This new clubhouse still stands today. Shoot attendance was not as large as the PSSA had expected, probably due to business conditions. Oscar Wilde and the Roxborough Gun Club were awarded the 1940, 50th anniversary State Shoot. George Baldwin was elected to his second term as PSSA President. Also elected were H. Henline, George Neubling and Doug Gilpin.

The Pennsylvania Class Championships were decided on June 16th and Al Mulhaupt, the oil magnate of Bradford, PA, won the Class A title by "annihilating" all 150 targets. Walter Beaver won the Doubles title in the afternoon by breaking a 98. He was followed by John Rigg, who had 97. On Saturday, Rigg also won the State Handicap Championship with a 100 straight, from the maximum distance of 25 yards, just 6 days after he posted a 100 straight in New Jersey State Handicap. Beaver trailed Rigg with a 98. The temperature was around 100 degrees. On Sunday, Steve Crothers won his 12th State Singles Championship with a 199. He lost his 56th target. Beaver and James Stinson trailed Crothers by 3 targets. Irene Hess defended her women's title. Rigg won the HAA with 392x400 and Beaver took the HOA.

1938 at Brinton Lake Gun Club, Concordville, PA
June 15-18, 1938

BEAVER BREAKS 200 STRAIGHT FOR SINGLES TITLE
AL MEISS WINS DOUBLES TITLE WITH 98

The Pennsylvania State Shoot was held at Brinton Lake Gun in Concordville, PA, which is near Philadelphia. This was the only year that the club hosted the shoot. George Baldwin was elected President of the PSSA and John Eshelman was elected ATA delegate. Eshleman, of Lancaster, PA, was President of the ATA in 1933.

The annual Class Championship saw Steve Crothers break 150x150 for the Class AA title, and C.D. Wolfe of Washington, PA, won Class A with 150 straight also. E. F. Hill of Hughesville, PA, won the State Handicap title breaking a 98 from the 19 yard line. He ran his last 95 targets to win the title. He needed every one of them as Walter Beaver finished second with a 97. During the tournament, Beaver had a straight run of 499 singles targets. Counting targets broken prior to the State Shoot, he left the shoot with 623 straight. Beaver was one of five shooters who broke 200 straight in the Singles Championship, which included three amateurs and two professionals. He had to go three extra innings to defeat Roy Hemming and Walter Penrose. Hemming was trying to defend the title he won last year at Elysburg. He missed his 45th shoot-off target while Beaver and Penrose went 50 straight. However, Penrose lost his 64th targets and the title went to the legendary Beaver, who broke all 75. Irene Hess won her third straight women's title and broke her first 100 straight during the tournament. She broke a 198, which was the highest women's score ever broken in the ATA to that date.

Al Meiss of Hazelton won his second straight twin bird title when he broke a 98x100, the highest doubles score ever broken in the State Shoot until that time. Beaver would break 98 in 1939 and the record was not broken until 1962 when Rudy Etchen smashed a 99 at West Penn. Beaver broke a 393x400 for the HAA title and the HOA award with 642x650. The 3 man team (Harrisburg Cup) went to went to John Rigg, Crothers and Beaver with a score of 299.

1937 at Valley Gun and Country Club, Elysburg, PA
June 16-19, 1937

"DARK HORSE" WINS STATE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
AL MEISS WINS DOUBLES TITLE WITH 96, BEAVERS TAKES HAA

The almost "perpetual" Pennsylvania State Champions of the last few years, Steve Crothers and Walter Beaver, were dethroned by Roy Hemming, a Reading, PA, "dark horse" whose name was not familiar to those outside of his home town. The Valley Gun Club hosted their first state shoot. C.D. Henline of Bradford was elected PSSA President and John Eshelman of Lancaster Vice President. Despite the rain that fell during the tournament, over 150 gunners took part in the classic.

Al Meiss broke a 96 to win his first Doubles Championship. Beaver was second with one less. W. B. Vernon, a 19 yard handicap shooter from Bradford, won the State Handicap title with a 95. He had to go an extra inning to edge George Baldwin of West Chester 23-22. Beaver too the HAA with 383, which was one more than Al Mulhaupt. This was Beaver's third HAA title. He would win 7 of these titles in his career. Crothers holds the state record with 10, and Frank Little has 8.

However, the big news in the tournament was the Singles Championship, won by Hemmig with 200 straight. There were four shooters tied for runner-up with 199, including Crothers and Beaver. Also breaking 199 were Alex Schwarz of Philadelphia and O. S. Sked, a former professional. The shoot-off for second place was one of the classic shoot-offs in state history, which was won by Crothers. Schwarz was eliminated first in the second 25. Beaver hung on for four shoot-off rounds, ending with a 99. Sked and the "ironman" Crothers battled another 50 targets before Sked lost two in the 6th string of 25 giving Crothers the runner-up award. Irene Hess won her second Ladies Singles Championship. She would go on and win 7 more during her career.

1936 at Bradford Gun Club, Bradford, PA
June 24-27, 1936

CROTHERS WINS 7TH SINGLES TITLE IN LAST 9 YEARS
"IRONMAN" ALSO CLAIMS 3RD HANDICAP TITLE, HAA

The Bradford Gun Club hosted their fourth State Championship, and it turned into the Steve Crothers show. The greatest shot in America won 3 of the 5 major titles, failing only to win the Doubles and HOA. Four years ago at North End Gun Club in Allentown, Crothers did win every major title.

Crothers had to go into overtime to snare the Handicap Championship, beating PSSA President, C.D. Henline in one round after both broke a 95 during regulation. Crothers shot from the 25 yard line. Andy Long won his first major title in State Shoot competition when he won the Doubles Championship, breaking 95x100. This was two more than Walter Beaver and three more than Crothers. In the Singles Championship, Steve broke a 198 which was three more than Al Mulhaupt and E. Murray Jr. It was his 7th State Singles Championship. He would win 7 more during his career. Crothers took the HAA with 385 and Mulhaupt won the HOA with 787x825. Mulhaupt would win the State Doubles Championship 12 years later at this same club. Irene Hess won her first of nine Pennsylvania State Women's Singles Championship. On the first day of the tournament, Beaver and Mulhaupt would share the Class A award in the Pennsylvania Class Championship with 148x150.

The "old vet", professional J. Mowell Hawkins, won all the professional titles during the tournament, winning the Singles with a 191, the Doubles with an 86, the Handicap with a 90, the HAA with 367 and the HOA with a 784. As a young man, Hawkins managed the 1909 State Shoot in Reading. Last year at Quaker City, he won all the events except the singles.

1935 at Quaker City Gun Club, Philadelphia, PA
June 12-16, 1935

STEVE CROTHERS WINS SINGLES, DOUBLES TITLES
WALTER BEAVER CLAIMS HANDICAP, HAA

Quaker City Gun Club, established in Philadelphia in 1924, hosted the 45th annual Pennsylvania State Shoot on June 12-16, 1935. This was the last time the shoot would be at Quaker City. Their last shoot was in 1927. It was Walter Beaver, Steve Crothers show. Beaver winning the Handicap title plus the HAA while Crothers won the Amateur State Singles title. 186 shooters participated in the four day tournament. T. I. Carson, President of the Quaker City Gun, won the Handicap Championship. Claude D. Henline was elected PSSA President at home because of illness, which prevented him from attending the shoot. At the annual meeting, an address were given by the President of Pennsylvania Game Commission, Major Nicholas Biddle and George S, McCarty. McCarty established the permanent homegrounds of the ATA in Vandalia, Ohio.

The first day saw Al Mulhaupt win the Ross Patterson trophy on the combined scores of the three events when he broke 164x175. Walter Beaver captured the Class A Championship on class day with a 149, missing his 132nd target. Crothers and Beaver tied for the Doubles title with 96's. In a classic shoot-off between the two trap-shooting giants, Crothers took the title with a 19-18 while Beaver took the runner-up prize with 19-17. On Friday, the day of the Singles Championship, it was clear with a high wind blowing. 127 gunners took the line to seek the august title. Crothers broke a 199 to lead the field by three targets. Mrs. G. Worrell II of Ardmore took the women's trophy with 185x200. The team of Crothers and J. Rauch won the Lindsley Cup in the two man team race with 196x200, while the Harrisburg Cup in the three man race was won by W. H. Pearson, T. E. Ridge and C. Francisco. The Reading Cup in the five man team event went to Beaver, C. H. Mason, Doug Gilpin, George Baldwin and Morley McBrayne. During another rainy and windy day on the last day of the tournament, Beaver broke a 95 to win the State Handicap title. There were 58 shooters entered in the event. This also gave him his second straight HAA title with a 386x400.

1934 at South End Gun Club, Reading, PA
June 13-16, 1934

WALTER BEAVER CLAIMS FOUR MAJOR PENNSYLVANIA TITLES
FRANK WALTER BREAKS 100 STRAIGHT TO WIN HANDICAP

The Pennsylvania State Shoot returned to the South End Gun Club for the first time since 1909 and despite the financial depression, more than 200 shooters took part in the shoot. Walter Beaver and Steve Crothers went head to head in a 50 target shoot-off for the State Singles title, won by Beaver. Great credit was due the club which is the oldest active trapshooting organization in America.

The Class A title in the Class Championship, held on the first day of the tournament, went to Steve Crothers, when he broke a 148 and out shot Walter Beaver in a two round shoot-off. Beaver took the Doubles Championship, won by Charles Newcomb last year, during the afternoon when he hit 94 targets. This was 5 targets better than Allen Heil of Allentown, PA, and John Eshelman. Heil is a former National Doubles champion. More than 2,000 spectators were thrilled at the classic shoot-off between Crothers and Beaver for the Singles Championship. Each broke 199 in regulation. But today Beaver turned the tables on his trapshooting rival, braking 50 straight in the two round shoot-off to claim his first Pennsylvania Singles Championship. They would meet again many times on the shoot-off line. Heil finished third with 198. Twenty four year old Alice Crothers, daughter of Steve Crothers, bowed to her cousin, Elizabeth Wister, for the ladies' title. Frank Walter of Easton, PA, saw to it that Beaver did not clean the table when he took the Handicap Championship with 100 straight. Beaver finished second with 97 and the HAA title with 390x400 and the HOA title with 605x625.

The two man Lindsley Cup went to Beaver and William Cochran. Chester County Rod & Gun Club won the Reading Cup five man team title and York County Gun Club took the Harrisburg Cup three man title.

1933 at York County Gun Club, Haines Park, York, PA
June 15-17, 1933

CROTHERS WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWCOMB WINS DOUBLES, HAA, RIDGE TAKES HANDICAP

York County Gun Club, located at Haines Park, east of York, PA, hosted the 1933 State Trapshoot. It was the first June Classic in York since 1913. Claude D. Henline was elected President of the PSSA at the annual meeting on June 15th at the Yorktowne Hotel in York. 95 shooters and wives were in attendance at the dinner meeting.

In the State Class Championship, Steve Crothers smashed 149 for the Class A title. Charles Newcomb and Walter Beaver finished second with 146. In the afternoon, Newcomb, a veteran shooter of over 30 years, won his second State Doubles title with a 91. Newcomb was one of America's greatest shooters 15-20 years ago. Runner-up to Newcomb was Al Mulhaupt of Bradford with a 88. He would finish runner-up in the Doubles four times during his career. On a rainy June 16th, Crothers won his 4th straight State Singles title. Long before the last shot was fired it was obvious that Crothers was the winner. Beaver finished 3 targets behind in second place. Beaver would finish second seven times in his career, six of those times to Crothers. Steve's daughter, Alice Crothers, won the women's title for the fourth straight year. The three man team Harrisburg Cup and five man team Reading Cup went to the Kennett Square Gun Club. Beaver and J. W. Yohn of the Kennett Square Gun Club won the two man team Lindsley Cup, giving the club a clean sweep of all three team events.

On the final day of the tournament, T. E. Ridge of Easton, PA, broke a 95 from the 21 yard line to win his only Handicap title. He was on the winning 1935 Reading Cup five man team champions. Alex Schwarz finished second, two targets behind. In the morning York County Special Singles event, Schwarz defeated Crothers in a two round shootoff after each posted 100 straights. Newcomb won the HAA and Crothers won the HOA. The HOA title was his sixth straight and the 11th in the last 13 years, and he would never win another one.

1932 at North End Rod & Gun Club, Allentown, PA
June 15-18, 1932

STEVE CROTHERS WINS ALL TITLE'S AT 42ND STATE SHOOT
AMERICA'S GREATEST SHOOTER TAKES NO PRISONERS

What a show the great Stevenson Morris Crothers put on in Allentown at the 1932 Pennsylvania State Shoot. Remarkably, he aced the entire shoot. The June Classic, held at North End for the first time since 1924, was the Steve Crothers show that may never be duplicated. All the great Pennsylvania shots were there, including Beaver, Newcomb, Mulhaupt, Heil, Eshleman, Meiss, Henline, Grove, Schwarz, Baldwin, just to name a few.

Under rainy, cloudy, threatening, hot weather, Crothers marched through the shoot like Sherman through Georgia. He won the Singles Championship with a 199, two targets ahead of J. O. Yohn and L. E. Strahley. He took the Doubles title with a 95, one target ahead of Bud Meiss. He won the Handicap Championship from 25 yards with a 99, one target ahead of Walter Beaver. He won the HAA with a 393x400, 8 targets ahead of Beaver . Crothers also won the HOA with 640x650.

In the Pennsylvania Class Championships, Alex Schwarz won Class A with 149, Al Mulhaupt took Class B with the same score. Crothers and Howard Nice won the two man team Lindsley Cup, South End won the three man Harrisburg Cup and West Chester won the 5 man team Reading Cup.
